PURE OILS — MOROCCAN BOTANICAL ESSENTIALS

Pure Moroccan Oils: Cold-Pressed Argan & Prickly Pear in Their Purest Form

A pure oil has no fragrance, no filler, no dilution — only the botanical extract as it comes out of the cold press. The two most valuable oils of Moroccan skincare heritage: argan for versatile daily care, prickly pear seed oil for concentrated targeted use. Both cold-pressed in our Casablanca workshop from raw materials sourced through certified Souss cooperatives.

This category holds our two pure Moroccan oils — the reference for face care, sensitive skin, and any routine where fragrance is not appropriate. For scented variants of argan for body and hair, see our scented argan oil collection.

How to Apply a Pure Oil

  1. On cleansed skin. After the evening cleanse, and optionally after a toner. The skin can still be slightly damp — it helps absorption.
  2. Warm between the palms. A few drops in the hand, warmed briefly between the palms so the oil is at skin temperature when it touches the face.
  3. Press, don't rub. Gently press the oil into the skin with the palms rather than rubbing it in. This distributes the oil evenly without stretching the skin.
  4. Work from inside outward. From nose outward across cheeks, from centre of forehead outward, from chin outward. For prickly pear, target the specific zones directly instead of covering the whole face.
  5. Wait one to two minutes. Let the oil settle before applying night cream on top. This is when the botanical actives migrate into the upper layers of the skin.
  6. Follow with your night cream. The cream seals the oil in and adds its own hydration. Our face creams pair naturally with either pure oil in the evening routine.

Together in the Same Routine

The complete Moroccan evening ritual

Argan and prickly pear can be layered rather than substituted. This is the routine of Moroccan women who want the most out of their botanical care.

Step 1 — Prickly pear on targeted zones

One drop on the eye area, one drop on the forehead, tapped gently with the ring finger. Concentrated, targeted, evening only.

Step 2 — Argan across the face

Two to three drops across the rest of the face — cheeks, chin, neck, décolletage. Pressed in with the palms.

Step 3 — Wait, then night cream

One to two minutes for the oils to settle, then a light layer of night cream to seal. The whole ritual takes three minutes and forms the base of the complete Moroccan skincare tradition.

How often?

Nightly for argan; two to four times per week for prickly pear, depending on how demanding the zones are and how mature the skin is. On very demanding skin, nightly for both is fine — the vitamin E in prickly pear is well tolerated.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell if an argan oil is genuinely pure?

Colour is a pale golden yellow, not deep amber (deep amber indicates roasted culinary argan, or oxidation). Smell is subtle and nutty, not perfumed or absent. Texture is fluid, absorbs into the skin within a minute rather than leaving a greasy film. Certifications on the label — USDA, ECOCERT, CCPB — verify the sourcing and process. Our full detection guide is available on the Green Mood blog.

Why is prickly pear seed oil so much more expensive than argan?

Because it's genuinely rarer. One litre of prickly pear oil needs about 500,000 seeds — nearly one ton of fruit. Every step is manual: harvest, seed extraction, cold-pressing. Argan is also cold-pressed manually but yields more oil per input kilogram. The price gap reflects real production cost, not marketing markup, which is why prickly pear is used drop by drop on targeted zones rather than freely across the whole face.

Can I use pure oils instead of a serum?

Yes — this is exactly how the Moroccan tradition uses them. Before formulated serums existed, a cold-pressed botanical oil was the concentrated evening care step. Pure argan or prickly pear applied on cleansed skin, before night cream, plays the same role as a modern serum with a different active profile: less targeted synthetic actives, more full-spectrum botanical nutrition.

How long do pure oils keep after opening?

Cold-pressed argan keeps 12 to 24 months after opening, stored away from light at room temperature with the cap sealed. Prickly pear is slightly more fragile: 12 to 18 months. A rancid smell or a clearly changed colour signals the oil should be replaced. Storing in a dark cupboard rather than in the shower or on a sunny windowsill extends shelf life significantly.

Does prickly pear oil actually reduce fine lines?

The vitamin E and antioxidant profile in prickly pear seed oil supports the skin's own regeneration processes and helps maintain suppleness on mature or demanding zones. Regular use over 6 to 12 weeks shows visible improvement in skin texture and comfort. No topical oil recreates lost collagen — the effect is on maintaining and supporting what's there, which for most people is meaningful and visible on the eye area and forehead.

Can I use pure argan on acne-prone skin?

Yes, in a reduced dose. Argan is non-comedogenic and is often well tolerated by combination and oily skin. Start with 1 to 2 drops at night rather than 3 to 4. If your skin has an active flare-up, reduce to alternate evenings and observe. For persistent breakouts, our Anti-Acne Treatment Pack combines specifically formulated products; consult a dermatologist for medical treatment when needed.
